The customary event of “Kalogeros”

Located in Mavrolefki
The customary event of Kalogeros (meaning “good old man” in Greek) takes place in Mavrolefki on Cheese Sunday or Tyrini and came to the region along with refugees from Eastern Thrace. It is revived by a group of masquerades led by the “Kalogeros”, who visit all houses and then meet up at the square. The event also includes a tug-of-war contest and a representation of plowing and sowing. It ends with the iconic resurrection of the “Kalogeros”. The event’s roots date back to ancient rituals, during which people asked from divine powers to make the soil fertile. Nowadays, it reminds us of our dependence on nature.
