Menikio Mountain

Located in Prosotsani
Menikio is one of the most important mountains of Eastern Macedonia on the border of the prefectures of Drama and Serres. The highest peak in the prefecture of Drama is Thamnotopi (1952 m). It is the southern end of Orvilos and Vrondus Mountains. It is separated from Falakro by the so-called Kalaboti Passage. It includes a system of peaks, canyons, cliffs and plateaus whose variation contributes to the creation of wonderful landscapes and a wide variety of biotopes. This variety of biotopes,is the reason why Menikio is rich in flora and fauna, especially birds, including more than a third of the species living in Greece. Of particular beauty and importance for the local economy are the century-old chestnut forests of the mountain, especially those in the Mikropolis area. In the remarkable mountain meadows of Menikio graze today free herds of wild horses. Due to its ecological richness, the European Union has included Mountain Menikio in the network of Special Protection Areas under the ecological network "NATURA 2000".
