The customary event of “Koupa”

Located in Kallithea
The event takes place in Kallithea on the Tyrini Sunday (the third week of the Carnival). In essence, it is the lighting of a ritual fire in the central square of the village with wood that is stacked by the residents in the shape of a cup (“Koupa” means cup in Greek). The lighting of the fire is done in a ritualistic manner. Indeed, villagers circle the "cup" and go round it three times while singing. They then torch the "cup", which the higher it is the more successful it is. A dance is set around the burning fire and the bolder ones jump over it. The customary event symbolizes the purification (through fire) of the souls of the people from their sins, so that they may enter the Easter period purified. In the past years, the event took place not only in the central square but in every neighborhood (mahalas) of the village and ended up in a competition on who lit the biggest "cup".
